Product Description
Footwear with a unique sole construction that mimics the feeling of walking barefoot on sand, activating muscles throughout the body and relieving stress on joints.

Amazon.com Review

MBT believes in footwear that makes you better from the ground up.

MBT: The idea of Physiological Footwear
MBT, Masai Barefoot Technology, was invented by Swiss engineer Karl Müller. During a visit to Korea he made the startling discovery that walking barefoot over paddy fields alleviated his back pain. Back in Switzerland, Müller began to develop a footwear technology that would make the natural instability of soft ground such as Korean paddy fields or the East African savannah accessible also to those, who have to walk on hard surfaces. In 1996, after years spent on research and development, Masai Barefoot Technology was mature enough to be launched on the market. MBTs are now available in over twenty countries, and approximately one million pairs of this revolutionary footwear technology are sold every year.

How the anti-shoe is pro-body:
Because of the specially designed sole, wearing MBTs significantly improves your gait and posture and relieves pressure on your joints and back. It also exercises a large number of muscles, whether you’re walking or standing. This, in turn, stimulates your metabolism, burns extra calories and speeds up muscle regeneration. In addition, MBTs can have a firming effect on abdominal, leg and buttock muscles.

The key to MBT is its patented sole structure.
The Shank, PU Midsole with Pivot and the Masai Sensor create a soft surface that is akin to walking barefoot on springy moss or on a sandy beach. This creates a natural instability underfoot, which activates the supporting muscle system and has positive effects on the entire body.

MBT

MBT technology mimicks walking in barefeet.

Wearing MBT mimicks walking on soft, natural ground.

When the heel strikes, the heel sinks into the ground and the body has to stabilize. When the foot rolls forward, there is a controlled rolling over the balancing area towards the ball of the foot. The toe rolls off (without pressure).
MBT
MBT's ensure the foot’s natural rolling movement and optimizes pressure distribution over the whole sole.

The Anti-Shoe

MBT would like to help people all over the world lead a healthier, more active and happier life. MBT is convinced that human fitness and health are significantly influenced by the way we walk – this conviction has already been substantiated objectively by many scientific studies.

MBT therefore attempts to awaken and strengthen the awareness of physiologically correct walking among people world-wide by disseminating the idea and concept of MBT physiological footwear. The benefits of physiologically correct walking can thus be made available to as many people as possible all over the world, in a straightforward and uncomplicated way.

MBT
MBT's Masai Sensor creates natural instability, to which the body responds with increased muscle activity.

MBT's Patented Sole Technology

The Lasting Board binds the upper and lower parts of MBTs together.

The Shank provides firmness to the sole and also ensures the foot’s natural rolling movement and optimizes pressure distribution over the whole sole.

The PU Midsole with Pivot triggers an active rolling movement and exercises a large number of stabilizing muscles throughout the entire body when walking or standing.

The Masai Sensor creates natural instability, to which the body responds with increased muscle activity.

The rubber Outsole protects the Midsole.

4 out of 5 stars Almost love it   September 6, 2010

This is my first MBT shoes.. Much anticipated and ready to love them. Overall I do like it, but it is little tight at the top of the feet and the strap is too short for adjustment. It velcro just comes off. After wearing for a while, it stretched and feels better. It is pretty bulky, not good for summer but come fall, these would be the only thing I wear. I had knee pain but after a day in these shoes, my knees feel much better. It takes a bit to get used to. It kinda gives you a 'spring' in your step.

2 out of 5 stars Ouch!   July 28, 2010

I was at the "Walking Store," had my feet measured, and tried out the Sirima shoe. Size 7, everything felt fine. I came home, and ended up ordering the Kaya from Amazon because it was more than $100 cheaper. Reading the reviews, I even went up half a size and ordered the 7 1/2. When the Kaya arrived, I was pleasantly surprised that it was cuter in person. Then I tried it on. I was in immediate pain due to both the shortness of the shoe and the narrow shoe box. My toes hit the front of the shoe and were squeezed so much that they hurt. I wasn't even wearing any socks; I was so sad! And had to return the shoes. (I ended up ordering the Lami in black and it fits fine in a 7 1/2.)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing   February 9, 2010

I recently sustained several fractures in my foot and have walked with pain and a distinct limp for 9 weeks. I put this shoe on and was pain free and no limp!!! Amazing. And I thought that I would be in a "orthopedic" shoe. But it is fairly attractive and my friends don't notice that it is "special". I did however, have to learn to be careful getting up from sitting as it is easy to pitch forward with the rocker bottom.

4 out of 5 stars Odd Sizing Issues   January 11, 2010
Shawna Lanne (San Jose, CA)
I got these in the mail a few days ago and think they are clunky cute, love how they feel when I walk and can feel different muscles being used when I walk in them as compared to barefoot or 'normal' shoes.

However, they run small my length is a perfect size six and I bought one size up and they just fit. I also am no able to wear them for more than about 30 minutes at a time because I need to break them in enough for my fat little feet to feel comfortable. I've never had a problem with Mary Jane's before but I think the special insert pushes my foot up just enough that it's a bit tight - and I don't want to go up another size because then they will be too big on me. I wish the bed of the shoe was a tiny bit deeper.

Other than the sizing issues these are awesome shoes, they feel good when walking, I feel my posture improve while I have them on and I used different leg muscles when I walk in them.

Just received my MBT Mary Janes and am already in love with this amazing shoe! I'm usually a 7.5 N and the 7.5 M fits really well since the velcro strap makes for either a snug or looser fit. I didn't want to take the plunge and plunk down $146.75 for a casual shoe - but, my feet say "Thanks!"
